The highly anticipated Google Pixel 5 and 4a 5G are just around the corner, and leaks about the devices are flooding the internet. The latest leaks include potential codenames for the two devices, codenamed “pram” and “ate” respectively.
The codenames were first discovered in the latest version of the Google Camera app by XDA Developers, and it’s speculated that they stand for “primate” and “eat” in reference to the upcoming devices.
As for the devices themselves, the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G are expected to be released in October. While the names may seem unusual, Google has a history of using codenames that correspond to the release date of their devices. For example, the Pixel 3 and 3a were codenamed “blueline” and “crosshatch,” respectively, in reference to the month of their release.
Hardware development happens years in advance, so it’s no surprise that codenames for what should be the Google Pixel 12 series have already leaked.
According to Mystic Leaks today, these are the alleged codenames for the Pixel 12 and what models they correspond to:
- Pixel 12 – Galago
- Pixel 12 Pro – Sasquatch
- Pixel 12 Pro XL – Silverback
- Pixel 12 Pro Fold – Capuchin
Google’s 2027 phones are all primates (though “Sasquatch” or Bigfoot is of course folklore). Given their size, “Silverback” is an appropriate name for Google’s largest phone.
The Pixel 10 lineup has horse-themed codenames, while it’s bears for the Pixel 11 series.

What’s more notable is that Google is likely sticking to the same phone types. There’s the entry-level device followed by the flagship in two sizes. Finally, you have a foldable. Given that these devices are two years out, naming and release could always change before launch.
With the small flagship phone, Google has had less than a year of market data, with the Pixel 10 Pro already in development at that point. If there were to be any shifts to the lineup, the Pixel 11 and 12 Pro would be when we start to see changes.
