Legendary video game character Sonic the Hedgehog gets ready to splash into the Magic: The Gathering world, releasing three new Secret Lair drops. This hyped partnership between Sega and Wizards of the Coast will introduce the iconic blue blur into the well-known trading card game, which will provide the fans with a completely new experience with their favorite fast hero.

This means that Magic: The Gathering has already experienced numerous Secret Lair cross-overs this year, SpongeBob, Deadpool, etc., and yet another is high on speed to arrive next month. Sonic the Hedgehog is getting three Secret Lair drops of his own, and one of them is a complete artifact-based drop… and we have the first look at it.

Magic: The Gathering – Secret Lair x Sonic: Turbo Gear
The crossover, unlike the recent Final Fantasy crossover, which consists of a whole draftable Magic set and four pre-constructed Commander decks, follows the precedent that sets of similar tie-ins by being restricted to three Secret Lair drops. Magic refers to its series of timed drops that all include only a few cards of a given small set with special art glued directly to Wizards of the Coast as Secret Lair.

Here, six of the Magic cards present on the Turbo Gear drop have been reprinted with new art and using new Sonic-themed names, and there is also the token card. That features a couple of appropriate staples of Magic: The Gathering’s most played format, Commander, such as Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves, purely because, of course, Sonic should have his card, and the shoes should be mentioned. Not to be overlooked, there is a legendary vehicle named the Weatherlight, which is present here in the form of Tornado, Sonic Biplane, and with a new change in the draft rules, you can virtually make that be your Commander, should you wish to do so.

According to WOTC, the two declines are intended to balance each other, in terms of cards as well as characters, by being part of one of the other drops, which will be centered on the personalities of Sonic. We can illustrate those with a guess, and an example is offered in the description of the store, Turbo Gear, when it equips The Reaver Cleaver, in this case, a redesign of the Knuckles’ Gloves, to Knuckles himself. This concept comes in smoothly along with other crossover sets such as the 2023 set titled Tomb Raider, where the reprinted cards are intended to go well with the new Legendary creatures in a way not dissimilar to a small build-your-own Commander deck starter set. The Turbo Gear Secret Lair drop (along with the other two) is available on sale on 14 July at 9 am PT on the official Secret Lair site at $29.99 for non-foil or 39.99 $ for foil. But you might as well be there in time because they will not be in a huge abundance, either, mind you, since there is only so much room to go around, although judging by past releases of other MS relationships of late, chances are they will fly off the shelves at a surprising rate.
